InstaCalc
I have a duty to share this with you. While surfing the net for useful tools to increase the efficiency of my surfing…I mean homework, I came across InstaCalc as a sidebar gadget for Windows Vista. Simple and effective it does the job. The sidebar gadget calculates in real time so I did not even have to hit the enter key. In the bottom right corner of the gadget is some text that says “make link”, I do not claim to be a cat but curiosity got me so I clicked it.
Little did I know that there was a whole website to go along with it. BEHOLD! A brilliantly simple web page opened with my calculation and more tools for me to use. I was amazed. Yes. Amazed. So add it to your favorites and use it.
The picture is linked to that very page.
To even increase your interest and use of it, there is a version you can embed into your website, just like below. Go ahead and play with it, visit the site, download the gadget, but do me a favor… if you like the instacalc click on their ads so they get some money J

How Live Search made my weekend better.
This past weekend I had National Guard drill again. First formation was on Thursday but because of an important interview I arranged to meet the unit at Ft. Irwin, CA instead of at the Riverside Armory like I usually do. This presented some complications for me because Google Maps (my used-to-be favorite online map) showed the route as 2 – 3 hours longer than the drive to Riverside and I would have to drive up the 15. The problem with the 15 is it connects the LA area to Las Vegas so on Fridays everyone and their mother is on that road heading north, the same direction Google was telling me to go. Google was telling me it would be just under 7 hours but I knew better. Plus I did not want to drive on those roads on a Friday for that long. See, I live in Phoenix so I know there has to be a better way. Something has to be more direct.
Google’s Advice
Now Yahoo has a neat feature that allows me to add additional destinations and it will route through those. I could play with the route a little bit to see if I come up with better times and distances. I know in my head that the little highways are 55MPH to the computer telling me how long it would take, but in reality you can easily do 65MPH without any issues. Unfortunately, Yahoo was not giving me the route I wanted. It was telling me the same thing Google was. Except Yahoo was more up to speed on those road conditions and said it would take almost just over 10 hours. Way too long.
Yahoo’s Route
Yahoo’s interface is heavy on the AJAX and Flash for an interface, which is bad because it doesn’t like my keyboard for some reason. I have to hit a key around 9 times before it registers in the text field. Yahoo is a step ahead on options as it allows multiple destinations and live traffic for most cities.
Playing with Yahoo
I added Parker, AZ as an additional route and Yahoo gave it up this way. The route above was calculated at above 10hrs! This would not do either. I tried many different cities between Phoenix and Ft Irwin and nothing was coming up right. Phoenix -> Kingman -> Ft Irwin was even worse. I had a feeling I should try something else.
Live Search – Shortest Distance
Live search returned the above route at 6 hours and 27 minutes. I knew this to be more correct so I took a closer look at what lay along the way.
Using the aerial view I could see some greenery along the Colorado River. A section of the road between Blythe and Needles ran along the river so I figure this might be a scenic drive.
   Â
As you can tell the green fields are part of the Colorado River Indian Reservation. It had been awhile since I had an adventure and I figured I could have one along the way and explore some new territory. All in all Live Search provided the best tools and features, it will be handy to use for route/trip planning. Yahoo Maps did allow for multiple destinations which the others did not, but the AJAX/Flash interface is cumbersome (Yahoo fix the typing problem!). Google Maps is great for around town, quick and simple but not feature rich.
My drive ended up being more enjoyable than the map could say. A good part of it was nice winding canyons and valleys that occasionally touched on the river. I arrived at my destination within 20 minutes of my planned time (I stopped for gas and food). I even arrived with enough time to do some training. I am glad I took this alternate route. It made the weekend much better, and left me with a better understanding of the area.
The Moral of the Story is:
Always check 3 sources for information before embarking on a trip. You might discover something you didn’t know or find a better route.

Visualizing DNA in a New Way.
Neatorama has an interesting post about a way to visually compare DNA using directions attached to the GATC’s of DNA. This is the link to neatorama’s post on it. This is a link to the video on youtube
What color paint is that? No color
“Researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have created ‘the world’s first material that reflects virtually no light.’ This anti-reflection technology is based on nanomaterial and could lead to the development of more efficient solar cells, brighter LEDs, and ‘smarter’ light sources. In theory, if a room were to be coated with this material, switching on the lights would only illuminate the items in the room and not the walls, giving a sense of floating free in infinite space.”
I am predicting a whole new interior design style being birthed out of this development. Now instead of ‘surfaces…surfaces’ we will have ‘voids…voids’ Honestly, I am wondering what the long term effects would be on someone who spent a good deal of time in a room like this would be. Perhaps we could coat the entire exterior of a house with this and truly have a dark mysterious nature. Since it does not reflect light does it also absorb Radar? Could be dangerous. Maybe that’s what all the ‘dark matter’ in the universe is coated with?
“Hey let’s cover ourselves with this stuff and run through the mall”
How to Argue Anything
In my travels I have met many a person that thought they were right about everything and anything. Yes, at times, I have thought I was right about things that I was not right about. Honestly though, how many times have you thought you were wrong when you were right? See what I mean? So to help you continue your human righteousness I give you this site that shows you a simple method to argue anything. Be warned, it is simple.
First Review Posted on PocketNow.com
Everyone cheer for Mike! Hip Hip Hooray!
If you are wondering what all the fuss is about, my first review has been posted on PocketNow.com. Writing a full review on a piece of software had a learning curve to it. When I first started the review I took screenshots of every single screen and menu. I also recorded a voice walk through of the software. Mostly to become familiar with the inner workings of it. My first draft was tediously boring compared to the posted one. I put the walk through to the pictures basically. Although there are a few that might find it helpful, the reality is that it would take 30 – 1 hr to read the whole thing if I continued at that pace. Brandon, the Editor-In-Chief, played a great role in mentoring towards a great review. Thanks Brandon. It was a fun process and a great opportunity and I am anxious for the next.
Oh, if you want to read the review, you can find it here at PocketNow.com
Orb 2.0; Take Your Media With You
Orb 2.0 installs on your home pc and indexes your music, video files, documents and TV tuner card. You can access all your content via a web interface. You can one file or a whole playlist. Search for that document you need and record TV shows. The interface works on any device with a webbrowser and internet connection. Since most of these devices (your phone) can also play music files you can stream the music on your home computer to wherever you are.
This really beats needing a larger memory card to store more music. This even beats trying to synchronize your MP3 player with your desktop and then worrying about it being lost, broken or even stolen. If you are like me you probably have a couple movies on your computer, these are accessible as well.
The whole program from install to use is seamless. There is a built in speed test when you access your content away from home. This tells your home pc how much quality the video or audio should be set to. Obviously, the greater network speed means greater quality. If you use Windows Media Player and are an URGE subscriber, any of the downloaded music requiring DRM licensing still work through Orb!
I tested this on my Pocket PC with my GPRS connection and it worked fine, the video size was a bit smaller but the stream worked great. When I connected to a Wifi connection the video was flawless. By the way, it works great on Vista.
In addition to media access the interface is Web 2.0 style. You can add Google Gadgets, RSS feeds and more to personalize your MyCast page on Orb. After using the web interface a few times you might even feel inclined to set it as your homepage. Check it here. It’s Free!!!
Interesting Photos some kid took…
That is about the best way to put it. This guy befriended a homeless kid, gave him a basic lesson in cameras and then gave him one. Awhile later the kid sent him an envelope full of photos he had taken. Some were overdeveloped, over exposed and so on. On the other hand, many of them were extremely artistic. They received a lot of praise on the Somethingawful.com forums (goons will heckle anyone) and not a lot of heckling goons were to be found.
