The Dog

His eyes were open but he could not see. He tried and tried, vainly squinting his eyes. Slowly he began to see swirls of primary colors that melted into more. He squeezed his eyes harder and slowly shook his aching head side to side. The pain! The throbbing pain! It stormed through his skull like thunder on a clear night. Confusion set in and turned into near panic. The colors swarmed into an unfocused blue. He was definitely awake and wished he was not.

He was laying on his back, he slowly began to sit up. The fire in his head intensified. “AHH!” he laid back down. The inferno died down. His eyes swam and the sky finally came into focus. He realized it was hot, something was tickling his neck. He reached for it and realized he was sweating, profusely. The ache in his head began to manifest itself in his vision, pulsing white splotches in his field of view. What the hell was he doing there? He could not remember where he was or what he was doing. He could not remember much at all, or anything for that matter. He heard breathing. No, it was panting. Panting! His memory jogged. The DOG! He turned his head to the side. There laying not ten feet from him was the dog, just panting and looking at him. A horrible feeling wrenched in his gut. Something about the dog was no bueno. Maybe he could scare it away. “Shoo!” his head exploded with pain. He groaned. The dog did not even flinch. The canine just kept laying there, just panting and just looking at him. Taunting him. That gut feeling wrenched his stomach some more. It was a mutt of some kind. Medium in size, its brown, black and tan colored coat had no shine. Its ears were relaxed and it had no concern on its face. It just blended with the desert. The Desert! His mind raced.
